Four countries, one day

We woke up in our swanky hotel in Austria and squirrelled our little bottoms off, stuffing my rucksack full of sandwiches from the breakfast buffet. (I’ve discovered being a pensioner is much like being a student, and being on a road trip is like a nice blend of the two!).

We left Austria and hit up the town/country of Liechtenstein in the foothills of the Alps. An interesting little place, it is.

Then, we pushed on down into Switzerland. Smiley was running like a well-oiled Swiss watch…. *ahem* We passed through tunnel after tunnel, emerging to the most stupendous views (Yes. “Stupendous.”). Beautiful lakes snuggled by mountain villages and Swiss-looking lodges with those cutesy little wooden alpine window shutters. The land is looking much greener than it has so far on the trip and everywhere you look, there have been mountains (except when you’re in the tunnels, obvz.)

Four countries in one day: we’ve been in Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and France (and have seen some lovely little places– two that have stuck in my mind are Fuchsberg and Wankdorf…).

We stopped at my auntie’s in Aix-les-Bains, in between Annecy and Chambery, and enjoyed a traditional Savoyard raclette (merci, tatie !!) - and the washing machine!! - before heading to a services for sleepsies.

Today, we're Marseille-bound, in line with continuing to head down towards the north coast of Africa. I'm looking forward to showing Tony my old stomping ground and the monkeys of Gibraltar. :-)

A few unanswered questions from today:

  • Where does the dark go when the lights are turned on?
  • What is the difference between a green diamond and a white diamond in the map book?!
  • What happens to your lap when you stand up?
Answers on a postcard.
